Women in the Plastics Industry

Last June, an assessment was carried out on an initiative led by companies in the plastics industry in Haute-Loire, with the aim of promoting the attractiveness of careers in plastics manufacturing for women, in partnership with the DDETSPP (Departmental Directorate for Employment, Labor, Social Affairs, and Professional Training).

This initiative was launched following a survey of plastics companies affected by the obligation to publish their professional equality index and facing recruitment difficulties.

Plastics manufacturing is one of the sectors identified in the plan to combat recruitment pressures.
The Human Resources Consulting Service was mobilized, financed by the State, and supported by OPCO2i AURA in partnership with the Polyvia branch.

ADDIPLAST GROUP and four other companies participated in this project. We benefited from a combination of group sessions and individual workshops led by the firm QANTIS.co.

The working group’s objectives are to improve the attractiveness and diversity of the plastics industry, in particular by identifying obstacles and dismantling preconceived notions about our professions.

Ambassadors for the plastics industry were identified in each company and shared their experiences in a video presenting 10 profiles of different women and professions, highlighting diversity in plastics companies in the Haute-Loire region.

We would like to thank Leslie CHEVALIER, laboratory technician, who volunteered to participate in the video and act as an ambassador for our group.

COMPLIANCE FOLLOWING GPI 2022 AUDIT

ADDIPLAST has successfully passed the GPI 2022 audit!

The decree n°2021-461 of April 16, 2021 relating to the prevention of losses of industrial plastic granules in the environment came into force on January 1, 2023 for production, handling and transport sites of industrial plastic granules whose operation started before January 1, 2021.

“The law of February 10, 2020 on the fight against waste and the circular economy provides that sites producing, handling and transporting industrial plastic granules must be equipped with equipment and procedures to prevent losses and leaks of industrial plastic granules, which represent a portion of the microplastics likely to end up in the environment.

It also calls for the implementation of regular inspections by independent certified organizations. ”

The three ADDIPLAST GROUP sites each received their recognition certificate from BUREAU VERITAS CERTIFICATION in March 2023. These certificates are valid until March 2026 and must be renewed.

Out of the 23 control points studied by the auditor, the group was able to meet all the requirements. This result is proof of our ambition to reduce our impact on the environment today and for years to come. We would like to thank the men and women who work on a daily basis to achieve these results within the group.

The certifications are available for our three production sites below:

ECO-DESIGN FOR BETTER RECYCLING

Five products detectable by near-infrared (NIR) technology have already been developed by Addicolor and are part of the sustainable range.

In France, with the extension of sorting instructions to all plastic packaging, sorting centers have been modernized, in particular by automating their processes and equipping themselves with optical separators using Near Infra Red (NIR) technology.
COTREP – French Technical Committee for Plastic Packaging Recycling, is assisting the Addiplast Group in analyzing and validating its new developments. These include new black masterbatches and compounds that are detectable by infrared in recycling streams. These formulations facilitate the categorization of black plastic items in post-consumer waste streams and their sorting using conventional NIR equipment.ommation et leur tri à l’aide d’équipements NIR conventionnels.
In the MB ADDILENE® and MB ADDITER® ranges, the Addiplast Group offers NIR detectable masterbatches that are suitable for food contact in accordance with European Regulation 10/2011. These have been specially developed to meet the needs of the rigid and flexible packaging markets, with three grades of polypropylene for injection molding and thermoforming and two grades of PET that can be processed by injection molding and extrusion. All of them have obtained COTREP certification. The use of these coloring solutions with an integration rate of less than or equal to 2% allows rigid and flexible packaging to be detected and correctly directed to the recycled material stream.

Thanks to its Addiscience® research center and its center dedicated to the design of Addicolor color masterbatches, the Addiplast group is in the process of offering new NIR-detectable solutions with even greater brightness and color depth. These criteria of opacity and color intensity are highly sought after by contractors and manufacturers, particularly for the needs of the cosmetics sector, which places eco-design and recyclability at the heart of its concerns.

The green square is launched at Addiplast Group!

This initiative is proposed by the CPIE (Centre Permanent d’Initiatives à l’Environnement). This center is recognised by the French state and by the ministry in charge of sustainable development. The CPIEs are present in the different regions of France to propose actions in favour of the environment to companies.

Why the green square?

In order to take part in the project, Addiplast has defined a dedicated area in its grounds. Thanks to the intermediary of the company’s environmental manager, Jérôme Bouchet, supported by the Chairman, Denis Chantegraille, the green square was created. The CPIE intervenes after its establishment to raise the awareness of employees to the notions of biodiversity, the functioning of ecosystems and their preservation.

This is an opportunity to observe the species present and to understand the challenges of sustainable development. The objective of this intervention is to raise awareness of the fact that everyone can set up a biodiversity patch at home. Everyone can therefore take part in protecting the environment at their own level. This helps to raise our awareness of the impact of ordinary practices (use of weed killers, fertilisers, pesticides…). In the future, the aim is for people to turn to alternative practices that protect the environment.

An environmental commitment

To ensure that the green space is used properly, the company is also comitted to respecting a number of requirements. This space is reserved for nature and is never used for commercial purposes. No human intervention takes place (watering, pesticides, fertilizers…). This will continue until the mowing, which is scheduled for the end of summer 2021. The fauna and flora can therefore settle there freely.

Through its green square, Addiplast Group is showing its support for the preservation of our ecosystem and water quality, for reducing soil sealing and for welcoming biodiversity in industrial zones. The company is pursuing its environmental commitment through this meaningful project and is thus consolidating its CSR procedures with Ecovadis.

Innovating for sustainable cosmetics

The cosmetics sector is facing a huge challenge: sustainable development. To accompany this transition, Addiplast Group is redoubling its efforts on innovation and the formulation of materials as close as possible to market expectations.

Interview: Polyvia & Béatrice Genetiot, Cosmetics & Helathcare Key Accounts Manager.

Béatrice Genetiot, can you talk about your activity within the Group Addiplast?
I joined Addiplast Group 2 years ago, in order to develop the cosmetic sector which is in full mutation from a regulatory point of view. Each project implies more and more requirements, but with a quality structure already in place for medical applications, we can easily transpose it to the cosmetic sector.
What are your key innovations for the cosmetics market?

Addiplast Group is a major supplier to the cosmetics sector, with a wide range of compound solutions for luxury goods and masterbatches for the entire sector: from mass-dyed materials to high-density materials composed of mineral fillers, including ceramic effects, marbled effects, cold touch, etc. and materials suitable for various finishing processes such as galvanization, metallization, lacquering, varnishing, etc., not forgetting the colored masterbatches with the third production site of Addiplast Group.

Our research center Addiscience focuses on the formulation of compounds using recycled materials:

obtained by mechanical recycling, PCR (Post Consumer Recycled) or PIR (Post Industrial Recycled), incorporating a PP grade suitable for food contact according to FDA NOL (Non Objection Letter) regulations, obtained from chemical recycling, which have properties equivalent to virgin materials.

These materials are rigorously selected and are subject to strict internal approvals to meet aesthetic or mechanical applications. Always with the aim of reducing the proportion of fossil-based plastics, we are developing compounds with a concentration of up to 30% of plant fibers such as flax, miscanthus, wood, oyster shells, etc., including a food version for primary packaging.

Addiplast Group collaborates since 2019 with Floreon, a company recognized in the field of sustainable materials technology and in particular formulations using a plastic of plant origin (PLA) by improving its performance, making it up to ten times more resistant than conventional PLA. These materials come from renewable resources and are suitable for composting (Ok Compost) and recycling. These new materials are available under our brand Addibio Renew®.

What specific issue has emerged lately?

Proposition 65 is a global issue, it is a list of chemical substances banned by the State of California, due to toxicity and possible carcinogenic effects. In this list, we find substances such as styrene or formaldehyde of which ABS and POM are composed. As an alternative to POM, we offer lubricated PBT and POK which guarantee flexibility and strength for pump mechanisms and mascara wands. And we have developed low-shrinkage PP grades suitable for metallization (ADDILENE PMD 50333) that can be used in tooling designed for ABS.
Are you working on other innovations?

A great deal of Research & Development work has been going on for over a year on the subject of galvanizing with less environmental impact. Hexavalent chromium 6 is about to be banned for galvanizing in Europe by 2024, in favor of the less chemically aggressive trivalent chromium 3. The challenge is to find solutions for PP parts, which are more complex to chrome-plate. It is a major challenge for all the players in the cosmetics industry to find solutions in the very short term. The Addiplast group has succeeded in involving the main players in the industry: galvanizers, chromium plating bath manufacturers and processors. Conclusive results give hope for a successful solution by the end of 2021.

What are the Addiplast Group’s challenges in terms of sustainable development?

If the circular economy is virtuous in ecological terms, it also brings new commercial, industrial and technological opportunities. We have opted for a proactive approach in order to anticipate our customers’ expectations, where the use of biobased or recycled polymers is becoming a strategic differentiation axis.

Among these actions, Addiplast Group joined the EcoVadis CSR and responsible purchasing performance assessment platform in 2019, and was awarded the bronze medal that year. The group is continuing its actions to reach the next level and the silver medal.
